All-new in 2006, the Subaru B9 Tribeca undergoes some streamlining for 2007. Most notably, the seven-passenger version is only available in the top-of-the-line Limited Navi & DVD; the seven-passenger entry and Limited models have been discontinued. A five-passenger Limited with Navigation, introduced late in 2006, continues into 2007.
Subaru extends its “No Charge Scheduled Maintenance Program”, introduced in September 2006, to 2007 models; the program entitles the owner to no-charge scheduled maintenance for 36 months or 60,000 km.
Outside, the Tribeca’s front grille changes from chrome to black; Diamond Grey Metallic replaces Mahogany Red Pearl, Harvest Gold Metallic replaces Champagne Gold Opal, and Newport Blue Pearl replaces Atlantic Blue Pearl. The front and rear suspension has been retuned for a smoother ride. Engine performance remains the same as in 2006, but due to new SAE standards, the horsepower and torque numbers change.
Inside, all models receive an auxiliary input jack in the central console, and pre-wiring for XM Satellite Radio; the rearview mirror has been enlarged, and the Limited receives a two-position memory feature.
The B9 Tribeca uses a 3.0-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. All models use symmetrical all-wheel drive (the name refers to the components placed symmetrically on the driveline for better balance) that is normally 55 per cent rear-biased, but which continuously adjusts the power distribution in response to driving and road conditions.
Features on the 5-Passenger include 18-inch alloy wheels, CD/MP3 stereo with wheel-mounted controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, garage door opener, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, fog lights, auto-off headlamps, power sunroof, spoiler, deep-tinted privacy glass, heated cloth seats with eight-way driver and four-way passenger power adjustment, leather-wrapped wheel, 40/20/40 split folding rear seat, variable intermittent wipers with de-icer, and rear washer/wiper.
The 5-Passenger Limited adds premium six-CD stereo with subwoofer, leather upholstery, and two-position driver’s memory.
The 5-Passenger Limited Navi adds a DVD-based navigation system with colour monitor and rearview camera.
The 7-Passenger adds a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with 9-inch screen, wireless headphones and remote control, rear climate control cooling unit, 50/50 split folding third seat, and navigation system with rearview camera.
The B9 Tribeca didn’t fare as well as expected on roll-out; the line-up’s streamlining may help, although it’s tough for many buyers to get around this SUV’s odd facial styling. Inside, the B9 is roomy and comfortable, and it’s pleasant to drive; the high-tech dash can be appealing, but it’s questionable if its futuristic appearance will age well. The third row of the seven-passenger is cramped and best-suited for children; opt for the five-passenger, and you get room for everyone, with plenty of space for luggage.
